According to the East Asian legend of the "red string of fate," the gods tie an invisible red string around the ankles of two beings who are destined to be soul mates. In this interpretation, the string spans length and breadth of existence (represented by an island surrounded by the sea) intertwined with the stages of life while still binding two souls together.
